Michael Greenham, operator of the Dartmoor District Museum and author of multiple works of local history, will be visiting the Casterton Library to discuss his latest book, Devotion to Humanity - The Life of Doctor David Peter Greenham 1889-1945.

Devotion to Humanity is a biography of Michael’s great-uncle, who grew up in Dartmoor and Casterton, was awarded a Victorian Government secondary school scholarship, served as a medic in World War One, and devoted his skills to doctoring in the Corryong district of north-east Victoria between the Wars.

After his death in 1945, a Corryong street was named after him in recognition of his war service and devoted 30-year contribution to the district and its veterans. He was described as “an expert diagnostician, ninety-nine and a half per cent of all case histories established his judgement beyond a doubt, and not once did his interest flag in any case…Accentuated by the highest motives, diligent, skilful, sympathetic and untiring, he gave unstintingly of all his powers in the service of his fellow-man”.

This is the story behind that tribute.

Michael has a keen interest in south-west Victorian history. In addition to operating the Dartmoor District Museum, he conducts historical tours of Dartmoor’s World War One Avenue of Honour tree carvings, has spoken at regional Anzac Day ceremonies, and completes local genealogical research on request.
