Creating Collections – Insects

Insects are wild, weird, and wonderful—you’ll never see them the same way again after this hands-on workshop. Discover how to start your own insect collection the right way: ethical, creative, and full of fascinating detail.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Find and catch insects safely and respectfully.
  • Know the rules—what’s okay (and not okay) when collecting native and introduced species.
  • Identify your finds using iNaturalist and other online tools.
  • Explore insect anatomy up close under the microscope—see what makes them unique.
  • Pin and pose your insect so every detail is clear for study, drawing, or display.
  • Store and protect your collection so it lasts (no mould, no insect-eating insects!).

You’ll also get to shape your collection around a theme—like “pollinators,” “agricultural pests,” or even “creepy crawlies of my backyard.”

At the end, you’ll take home your very own pinned insect, ready to show off, study, or spark curiosity in others.

Your tutor: Chris Rockley

Chris is a scientific illustrator who’s been sharing the art of looking closely at nature since 2008. She’s worked with museum specimens and field collections to create drawings for books and journals—and now she’s here to show you how to see insects in a whole new way.
